An 11-year-old girl found dead in her Illinois home Tuesday was allegedly stabbed to death by a 14-year-old girl, the Chicago Tribune reports.
“There is evidence of trauma,” Mundelein, Ill. Police Chief Eric Guenther said at a news conference Wednesday. “Multiple stab wounds were evident… There were signs of a struggle.”
The victim suffered nearly 40 knife wounds, according to Lake County coroners, and was slashed across her chest, neck and arms. The police chief did not release the names of the victim or the suspect.
The 14-year-old girl called the police around 8:25 a.m. on Tuesday, and told them the younger girl was unconscious. Officers arrived minutes later and took the teenager into custody. Police charged her as a juvenile with first-degree murder. Guenther said the two girls were alone in the home at the time.
Lake County State’s Attorney Mike Nerheim declined to discuss details of the case but told reporters, “there is evidence that would indicate that those charges are appropriate.”
