Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) passengers walk off of a train on October 15, 2013 in San Francisco, California.

BART workers went on strike this Friday at the stroke of midnight after negotiations over a new work contract ended in deadlock and mutual recrimination.

Negotiators emerged from a 30-hour session to announce that, among other sticking points, unions and management remained 4 percent apart on a pay raise. One union representative declared that nothing short of a “miracle” would bring the two sides together.

Barring divine intervention in the next few hours, Bay Area commuters will be waking up to a nasty commute as they face their second transit strike in the past three months.
