An Auburn lacrosse player trying to live out a Grand Theft Auto fantasy allegedly stole a truck, kidnapped a woman and hit several parked cars over the weekend in Baton Rouge, La.
During questioning by an officer, Zachary Burgess told the police that he “wanted to see what it was really like to play the video game Grand Theft Auto,” the local NBC affiliate reports.
Police say the 20-year-old saw a truck left running in a parking lot with a woman in the passenger seat on Saturday, got in and tried to steal the vehicle. As he drove away he rammed into nine parked cars. The woman said that Burgess forcibly held her captive in the truck as she tried to jump out of the car to safety.
Burgess was arrested and charged with theft of a motor vehicle, nine counts of hit-and-run, and kidnapping. He was released on Sunday after posting an $80,000 bond.
