NAVSEA is the largest of the Navy’s five main command centers. The Navy’s ships, submarines, and combat systems are built and maintained at NAVSEA.

The Washington Navy Yard, which houses NAVSEA, is the U.S. Navy’s oldest onshore establishment. The land was bought in 1798 and has been in operation since the beginning of the 19th century.

The Navy Yard is also home to multiple museums, including the National Museum of the U.S. Navy, the Cold War Gallery, and the Display Ship Barry. Several restaurants are also housed in the complex.

Nearby public schools, including Amidon-Bowen Elementary, Brent Elementary, Eastern High School, Eliot-Hine Middle, Jefferson Academy, Tyler Elementary, have been locked down.
