Command Post: Military officers at Andrews Air Force Base deal with the water shortage earlier this week.

It’s one thing to see Detroit file for bankruptcy, as it did Thursday. At one time, it was the arsenal of democracy and the birthplace of chrome-plated dreams.

It’s quite another to see Andrews Air Force Base shut down just outside of Washington because the local water authority couldn’t keep the water running during the summer’s hottest days this week (it reopened Friday after being closed for two days).

Andrews, after all, is home to Air Force One, and all it represents.

While unrelated, both events highlight the increasingly decrepit nature of the nation. Sequestration is simply the symptom.
