— Air Force Major General Christopher Bogdan, the Pentagon’s deputy program manager for the multi-service F-35 fighter, speaking Monday to an Air Force audience. Bogdan, who has been tapped to run the program, was describing the current relationship between the Pentagon, which is buying the F-35 fighter, and Lockheed Martin, which is building it.

The $396 billion program, slated to procure 2,457 planes at $161 million each, is the biggest in world history. It’s so big, in fact, that the Pentagon has begun listing the aircraft, and its engine, as separate items in its Selected Acquisition Reports that chart cost growth.
