A massive car wreck that ensnared over 40 vehicles in northwestern Indiana killed three people and injured more than 20, authorities said Friday.
Harsh weather, including snow and whiteout conditions, were among the factors that caused the crash late Thursday on the eastbound stretch of Interstate 94, the Associated Press reports.
Indiana State Police Cpl. Larry Koebcke said that lanes remained closed Friday as clean up crews cleared the wreckage.
Thomas Wolma, 67, and his wife Marlyn, 65, died in the wreck, according to John Sullivan, coroner of LaPorte County. Jerry Dalrymple, 65, was also killed in his car.
Indiana State Police Sgt. Ann Wojas confirmed that 20 to 30 people were hurt in the crash that crushed semitrailers and passenger cars. At least one person was injured critically. The wreck occurred about 60 miles from Chicago.
