A new Woodbridge, Va. restaurant named for country star Toby Keith stirred controversy when it posted a “no guns permitted” sign on its front door, radio station WTOP reports.  Residents criticized the restaurant’s policy on its Facebook page, with some accusing Keith — who licensed his name but does not own the restaurant — of being anti-gun.

The restaurant, Toby Keith’s I Love This Bar & Restaurant, posted a statement on its Facebook page reaffirming its policy.

“While we understand and respect every person’s right to own and bear arms, we at Toby Keith’s I Love This Bar and Grill, with guidance from the State of Virginia and based on insurance regulations, have adopted a no weapons policy. It is our desire to provided a safe, enjoyable and entertaining experience for our patrons and staff.”

Virginia residents are permitted to openly care firearms without a license.
