Prisca Jeptoo crossed the New York City Marathon finish line at 2:25:07 Sunday, winning the title for the women’s race.
Jeptoo, 29 and from Kenya, came from behind to overpass Buzunesh Deba, and maintained an overall pace of 5:33 per mile.
In the men’s portion of the race, Geoffrey Mutai of Kenya came in first at 2:08:24, pulling away from his fellow countryman Stanley Biwott in the last few miles to take the lead.
Paralympic track medalist Tatyana McFadden won the wheelchair portion, completing a historic sweep of titles this year after winning marathons in Chicago, Boston, and London. The 24-year-old finished in 1:59:13, with a mile pace of 4:33, becoming the first person to complete a wheelchair marathon Grand Slam.
In the wake of April’s Boston Marathon bombing, marathon officials ramped up security efforts with the installation of about 1,500 cameras, bomb-sniffing dogs, scuba divers to scan bridges and shorelines, baggage screenings, and surveillance helicopters hovering above, USA Today reports.
This is the first time in more than a year that runners have raced through the five boroughs, as last year’s marathon was canceled due to damage from Hurricane Sandy.
