The math teacher killed in Monday’s shooting at a Nevada school was a former Marine and a member of the Nevada Air National Guard who served two tours in Afghanistan, his brother told NBC News.
Authorities and locals called Michael Landsberry, who was 45, a “hero.” He is believed to have intervened when a Sparks Middle School student pulled out a gun. The student shot and killed Lansberry and injured two students before taking his own life, police said. Authorities have not yet disclosed the name of the shooter, a possible motive, or how the student obtained the weapon.
The two wounded students, both age 12, areĀ listed in stable condition, the Associated press reports.
The middle school in Sparks, Nev., just east of Reno, will remain closed for the rest of the week.
