Top New Jersey Court Allows Same-Sex Marriage

The New Jersey Supreme Court paved the way Friday for same-sex couples to start getting married in the state on Monday.

The justices unanimously denied Gov. Chris Christie’s request to stay a lower-court’s earlier ruling that the state must allow same-sex marriage by Monday, the Associated Press reports. That appeal will still be heard, but the unanimous decision against delaying the lower court’s order until then signaled that the state’s prospects in overturning the order are not promising.

The decision will make New Jersey the 14th state to allow same-sex marriage, in addition to the District of Columbia.
