Bay Area Rapid Transit workers won’t be walking off the job today, but a strike might be looming in the near future.

The two largest unions representing transit workers announced a 24-hour delay in a planned strike to allow one more day of contract negotiations. “The public deserves to have a riding system that works. We will give the [transit agency] one more day to get it together,” Antonette Bryant, leader of Amalgamated Transit Union Local 1555, told AP.

Talks to avert a strike took place throughout the weekend, and the two sides appear to have settled on pension and health care issues, but are still at odds on work rules. BART is the nation’s fifth-largest commuter rail system, and transports nearly 370,000 riders each day.
