The reason alleged gunman Aaron Alexis was able to kill 12 people last week in the Washington Navy Yard shooting was that “there weren’t enough good guys with guns” present, National Rifle Association executive vice president Wayne LaPierre said on NBC’s Meet the Press on Sunday.

“When the good guys with guns got there, it stopped,” he said.

LaPierre said more military-facility personnel need to be armed to prevent such attacks. He also criticized the nation’s treatment of the mentally ill. “They need to be committed, is what they need to be, and if they’re committed, they’re not at the Navy Yard,” he said.

President Obama is scheduled to meet with families of the shooting victims and speak at a memorial service at the Washington Navy Yard on Sunday evening.
