The teen who opened fire in a Maryland mall killing two people before turning the gun on himself last week wrote about his plan in his journal, police said Wednesday.

Darion Aguilar, 19, wrote about his intention to kill people and also wrote an apology to his family “for what he was planning to do,” police said. Aguilar wrote in his journal that he had a plan but did not get into specifics, CNN reports.

Aguilar’s mother described her son Sunday as a “gentle, sweet kid” and said she doesn’t believe he knew the victims, CNN reports.

Aguilar fired as many nine rounds with a 12- gauge shotgun at a skateboard shop in a Columbia, Md., mall on Saturday, killing Brianna Benlolo, 21, and Tyler Johnson, 25. Police say he entered the store with the shotgun in pieces in a backpack before disappearing into a dressing room, where he assembled the gun.
