Widespread Sickness Cuts Short Royal Caribbean Cruise

More than 600 people apparently infected by norovirus

With over 600 people having fallen ill on the Royal Caribbean cruise ship Explorer of the Seas, company officials have decided that the vessel will return to New Jersey already on Wednesday, two days ahead of schedule.

Representatives of Royal Caribbean Cruise Line said Sunday that they were “unable to deliver the vacation our guests were expecting” due to the widespread sickness.

Test results are expected mid-week, but the symptoms of the outbreak, vomiting and diarrhea, are consistent with the highly contagious norovirus, the most common cause of acute gastroenteritis in the U.S.
