A teaching assistant was killed Tuesday at Purdue University in West Lafayette, Ind. and police have a suspect in custody, according to campus police.
Campus police chief John Cox identified the victim as 21-year-old Andrew F. Boldt, NBC News reports. Cox said the suspect, 23-year-old Cody M. Cousins, turned himself in outside the electrical engineering building where the attack took place.
The university said on Twitter that gun shots were reported at around noon.
The school alerted people on campus about the shooting by text message, according to local TV station RTV6. The school advised students and staffers to “remain sheltered in place until further notice” as police searched the area.
The university has suspended classes through Wednesday.

Today’s shooting at Purdue University is a tragedy, and our heartfelt condolences go out to the family of the victim and to everyone in the Purdue community. I commend the professionalism of the Purdue University Police Department in apprehending the suspect and bringing the situation to a swift conclusion. The Indiana State Police are on the scene and will continue to assist local law enforcement with the ongoing investigation.
The 40,000-student campus is located about 60 miles northwest of Indianapolis.
