The former school teacher whose sexual relationship with her 12-year-old student shocked America in 1997 was briefly jailed Sunday night after driving without a license.

Mary Kay Letourneau, 51, failed to appear in court for a suspended driver’s license case in Seattle, and was jailed Sunday and released Monday afternoon on $5,000 bond.

Letourneau was an elementary school teacher and mother of four children when she began an affair with Vili Fualaau in 1995. After a relative of her husband tipped off the police in March 1997, Letourneau pled guilty to second-degree child rape and served six months in jail, and gave birth to a daughter. Although her plea bargain prohibited her from contacting Fualaau, she became pregnant by him a second time in 1998 and was given a seven-and-a-half-year sentence. After her release Letourneau married Fualaau, who was by then 22.
