Jahi McMath, the 13-year-old girl declared “brain dead” after tonsil surgery, was discharged from an Oakland hospital late Sunday night.
The Los Angeles TimesĀ reports that McMath left under her family’s care after a coroner had certified her death on Friday, Dec. 12. A statement from the hospital wished the McMath family “closure and peace.”
The family’s attorney dismissed the death certificate. “They are going to care for her, respect her and love her,” he told the AP, “and they’re going to call her Jahi, not `the body.'”
The McMath family protested the hospital’s recommendation to unplug her ventilator after doctors found an irreversible cessation of all brain activity.
