The U.S. Marshals Service plans to auction off items from Whitey Bulger’s Santa Monica, Calif. apartment, The Boston Globe reports, offering a glimpse into one of the most notorious mob bosses in history. Authorities plan to split profits from the auction between families of people Bulger murdered.
The 84-year-old gangster was convicted in August on charges including murder, drug trafficking and extortion during his reign on Greater Boston’s organized crime from the 1970s through the 1990s. He was sentenced to two consecutive life terms in prison on Nov. 14.
Items to be auctioned include Bulger’s gold and diamond claddagh ring, estimated at $48,000, a replica of the 1986 Stanley Cup championship ring, a boxing mannequin that Bulger positioned in his window to make it seem as if someone was on the lookout, as well as nine fedoras, a telescope and an assorted porcelain cat collection. Authorities are appraising his possessions, which were seized after his arrest two years ago, in Massachusetts.
