Seven men were shot and wounded from a barrage of gunfire in Oakland, Calif., on Monday night.

Police responded to reports of gunfire over three blocks of East Oakland just after 6:10 p.m. on Monday night, the Oakland Tribune reports. It wasn’t initially clear what motivated the shooting, and early reports said that two men were in critical condition and five others are expected to survive.

“This is really kind of outrageous,” Oakland police Chief Sean Whent said. “Six o’clock at night isn’t that late at night. [There were] a fair number of rounds fired out here, so [this is] really pretty brazen stuff on the street corner at that time of day.”

Police are asking witnesses to the shooting to come forward with information.
