Storms might be threatening East Coast travel Wednesday, the busiest travel day of the year, but at least there’s some good news on the weather front: The slowest hurricane season in decades is coming to a close.
Hurricane season officially ends Nov. 30, but the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) has already proclaimed it the mildest season in the Atlantic since 1982.
2013 hosted 13 storms in the Atlantic basin and only two became hurricanes — both mild.
“A combination of conditions acted to offset several climate patterns that historically have produced active hurricane seasons,” said NOAA lead hurricane forecaster Gerry Bell, Ph.D. “As a result, we did not see the large numbers of hurricanes that typically accompany these climate patterns.”
