The Virginia state Senator who police say was stabbed by his left the hospital early Friday, and declared that “some wounds won’t heal” after his son’s subsequent suicide.

Creigh Deeds, the 2009 Democratic gubernatorial nominee in the state, survived multiple stab wounds and his son committed suicide. Police have described it as an attempted murder-suicide. Deeds had been in the hospital since Tuesday.

“I am alive so must live,” Deeds wrote on Twitter. “Some wounds won’t heal. Your prayers and your friendship are important to me.”
