Ten children and a bus driver were rescued Thursday from a fast-moving creek after a Kansas school bus tipped over and was partially submerged in the water.
Butler County Sheriff Kelly Herzet told the Associated Press that the older children, aged around thirteen, helped the younger to climb through a roof hatch, while waiting for emergency personnel to arrive.
Due to the rapid current, the rescue team decided against using boats, and instead pulled the kids to safety with the help of lines. An investigation is being launched to find out how the accident happened, but Sheriff Herzet said that the bus had driven into a part of the road already submerged in water.
“The lesson here is not to drive through water,” he said.
None of the victims are reported to have sustained serious injuries.
