California police are investigating the discovery of human remains found in two separate sewage sanitation facilities that may belong to the same person.
Homicide detectives in Carson, Calif., found a calf and foot at the Joint Water Pollution Control Plant on Saturday, and on Monday, a female torso with the head attached was found at another Los Angeles County sanitation facility 23 miles away, the local NBC affiliate reports. Authorities believe the body was dumped into a manhole and wound up at one of the sewage plants, where it was dismembered by machinery, allowing some body parts to flow to the other plant.
“There is a direct link to this sanitation district processing area and Carson’s,” said Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Lt. Mike Rosson. “Anything coming into this plant comes in through a 72-inch line. It goes through a centrifugal pump, so you can imagine what kind of damage to a person’s body would happen.”
Rosson said the death is being investigated as a homicide. County coroners are working to determine the cause of death.
