A North Carolina Republican activist has quit his local party post after backlash from racially-charged remarks he made in an interview that aired Wednesday on The Daily Show.

Don Yelton, the Buncombe County precinct chairman, was discussing the state’s voter ID law when he said if the law hurt college students, whites, or “a bunch of lazy blacks that wants the government to give them everything, so be it.” He also added that the law is “going to kick Democrats in the butt.”

The state party chairman called the comments “completely inappropriate and highly offensive,” the Associated Press reports. GOP officials threatened to take steps to remove him if he didn’t step aside, and Yelton announced his resignation Thursday.
