Bay Area Rapid Transit, which serves hundreds of thousands of commuters in the San Francisco Bay area of California, is changing its safety rules after the deaths of two workers during a labor strike last weekend.

BART officials said Thursday that trains will be required to stop, slow down or change tracks when they approach maintenance workers on tracks. BART officials acknowledged that the changes may cause delays, but “we can’t live with a continuation of this situation and what happened on Saturday,” the system’s assistant general manager told the AP.

The two workers who were killed were struck by a train traveling 60 to 70 mph, and reportedly did not have radios. Federal safety investigators are investigating the accident.
