The Justice Department is planning to sue the state of North Carolina on Monday over new voting rules that it says discriminate by race.
The Feds are challenging a series of tough new laws, including a requirement that voters present government-issued identification at the polls to cast a ballot, the Associated Press reports. A recent state board of elections survey found that hundreds of thousands of registered voters, many of whom are young, black, or poor, didn’t have a state-issued ID.
Attorney General Eric Holder is expected to announce the suit Monday, three months after the Supreme Court struck down a section of the historic Voting Rights Act that authorized stricter federal oversight of the state elections.
