Police say they believe the skeletal remains found in an old car in South Dakota belonged to two 17-year-old girls who disappeared in 1971.
The presumed remains of Cheryl Miller and Pamella Jackson were discovered by a fisherman, CBS reports, and authorities lifted the vehicle from Brule Creek, near Elk Point, S.D., on Tuesday afternoon.
Miller and Jackson were last seen on May 29, 1971, driving a beige 1960 Studebaker Lark on their way to a party. A 2004 search of a nearby farm turned up bones, clothing, a purse and other items but no car. Authorities have never said if those bones belonged to the girls.
A man already serving a prison sentence on unrelated charges was indicted for their deaths in 2007, but the charges were dropped when it was determined a fellow inmate lied about the man confessing to him.
