Forecasters are predicting that the rains will soon let up, but the National Guard is continuing to evacuate the towns endangered by floods near Boulder, CO.
Thousands of people have been evacuated from massive flooding that has already killed three and left one person missing, the Associated Press reports. President Barack Obama signed an emergency declaration Thursday night as the rains refused to relent.
Several towns remained isolated without electricity or telephones, with residents forced to take shelter on higher ground. The town of Lyons, north of Boulder, was left isolated when waters turned the only road to the town into a river. The Colorado National Guard reached the stranded town on Thursday evening, delivering much needed supplies after sewage and water systems were inundated by flooding. The National Guard has started trucking all 2,000 residents out of the town, 9NEWS reports.
In Boulder County, 8,000 telephone numbers were called with messages to evacuate, prompted by rapidly rising creek levels.
