A Detroit man pleaded guilty this week to stealing his father’s body from a cemetery in the hope of bringing him back to life, the Associated Press reports.

The guilty plea Monday by Vincent Bright will allow him to avoid prison. A conviction could have landed him in prison for 10 years, but instead he’ll get credit for time served and probation.

Bright, who was 48 at the time, exhumed and stole the body of Clarence Bright from Gethsemane Cemetery on Jan. 14 and stored it in a freezer at his home. Family members tipped off the police, who then found the corpse at Bright’s house on the east side of Detroit. Police say that Bright is a religious man and exhumed the body in hopes that his father would be resurrected.

Though prosecutors sought a mental health examination for Bright, he was found competent to stand trial. A judge ordered him released on bail ahead of a sentencing hearing next month.
