A military court has sentenced the shooter in the deadly 2009 Fort Hood shooting spree to death, the Associated Press reports.

Maj. Nidal Hasan, an Army psychiatrist, killed 13 people and wounded more than 30 others in the rampage on the Texas military base. The court ruled Wednesday that he be executed by lethal injection.

Hasan, who represented himself during the trial, freely admitted that he was the gunman, and said he opened fire on a crowded waiting room — where troops were getting final medical checkups before being deployed to Iraq and Afghanistan — to protect Islamic insurgents abroad from American aggression.

He could become the first American soldier executed in over 50 years.
