Mr. Bartlett's neighborhood.

You might think this story from Monday’s Washington Post is simply about some Maryland congressman who believes the end of the world may be drawing near and wants to be prepared:

The electrical grid could fail tomorrow, he frequently warns. Food would disappear from the shelves. Water would no longer flow from the pipes. Money might become worthless. People could turn on each other, and millions would die.

Fine and dandy. It’s just the fact that Rep. Roscoe Bartlett is also the chairman of the House Armed Services Committee’s tactical air and land forces subcommittee – responsible for guiding the investment of tens of billions of Pentagon dollars every year – that might give one pause.

After all, if he’s preparing to live in a cabin deep in the West Virginia woods because he fears civilization as we know it may be on the verge of collapse, how keen a judge is he of the threats the nation needs to be ready for in the 21st Century?
