(LOS ANGELES) — Award-winning journalist and war correspondent Michael Hastings, whose unflinching reporting ended the career of a top American army general, died early Tuesday in a car accident in Los Angeles, his employer and family said. Hastings, who was 33, was described by many of his colleagues as an unfailingly bright and hard-charging reporter who wrote stories that mattered. Most recently, he wrote about politics for the news website BuzzFeed, where the top editor said colleagues were devastated by the loss. “Michael was a great, fearless journalist with an incredible instinct for the story, and a gift for finding ways to make his readers care about anything he covered from wars to politicians,” said Ben Smith, BuzzFeed’s editor-in-chief. Smith said he learned of the death from a family member. Authorities said there was a car crash early Tuesday in the Hancock Park neighborhood of Los Angeles that killed a man, but coroner’s officials could not confirm whether Hastings was the victim. Hastings won a 2010 George Polk Award for magazine reporting for his Rolling Stone cover story “The Runaway General.” His story was credited with ending Gen. Stanley McChrystal’s career after it revealed the military’s candid criticisms of the Obama administration. Hastings quoted McChrystal and his aides mocking Obama administration officials, including Vice President Joe Biden, over their war policies. At a Pentagon ceremony for his subsequent retirement in 2010, McChrystal made light of the episode in his farewell address. The four-star general warned his comrades in arms, “I have stories on all of you, photos of many, and I know a Rolling Stone reporter.” When he died, Hastings was a contributing editor at Rolling Stone, where Managing Editor Will Dana was quoted Tuesday saying Hastings exuded “a certain kind of electricity” that exists in great reporters whose stories burn to be told. “I’m sad that I’ll never get to publish all the great stories that he was going to write, and sad that he won’t be stopping by my office for any more short visits which would stretch

(ASHLAND, Ohio) — A mentally disabled woman charged with shoplifting a candy bar asked to be jailed because three people “had been mean to her” — then went on to tell authorities about her time spent in unfathomably cruel servitude, along with her young daughter, at the hands of three people, authorities said Tuesday. On several occasions, according to an FBI affidavit, the suspects injured her and ordered her to go to an emergency room for pain medication they would then take for themselves. The 29-year-old woman was forced to do housework under the threat of harm to her and her child by her captors’ pet python or pit bulls, authorities allege, and a menagerie of snakes was put in the terrified 5-year-old’s face until she cried. Authorities announced federal charges Tuesday against three people they say invited the woman and her child to live with them in their blue-collar Ashland neighborhood of older two-story houses. Beginning in early 2011, they forced the mother to cooperate with them by threats and physical abuse, authorities said. The woman and her daughter were freed in October after police investigated an abuse allegation one of the suspects made against her, authorities said, and they are doing well. “The victim in this case is slowly recovering,” U.S. Attorney Steve Dettelbach said. Jordie Callahan, 26, Jessica Hunt, 31, and Daniel J. “DJ” Brown, 33, were charged with forced labor. Callahan also was charged with tampering with a witness in the investigation. The suspects had an initial appearance in U.S. District Court in Cleveland and were ordered jailed until a bond hearing on Monday. Callahan’s mother, Becky Callahan of Ashland, said in a phone interview that the allegations were “all lies.” She said that the alleged victim was friends with her son and Hunt, her son’s girlfriend, and that they tried to help the woman out by offering her a place to live because she didn’t have a home. Andrew Hyde, who represented Callahan on related state kidnapping charges dismissed Tuesday as the federal case was

(NEW YORK) — New video footage of a suspected bomber riding a blue bicycle was offered Tuesday along with a $65,000 award in an effort to generate leads in the 2008 blast at the military recruitment station in Times Square. Photos and video will be displayed on digital billboards throughout the Northeast, including in Times Square, while the FBI and New York Police Department are offering up to $65,000 for information leading to the identification, arrest and conviction of anyone responsible for the March 6, 2008, attack, authorities said. No one was injured in the early morning bombing at the U.S. Armed Forces Recruiting Station. Authorities said the explosive device was built using an ammunition can commonly found on battlefields in Iraq and Afghanistan. Officials say the suspect and possible accomplices may be connected to earlier unsolved bombings at the British and Mexican consulates. (LIST: Top Ten Defining Moments of the Post-9/11 Era) “Someone, somewhere, knows something about a bomber who’s still on the run,” said George Venizelos, head of the FBI’s New York office. “Today we’re asking for the public’s assistance in finding those responsible and encouraging the public to look closely at these photos and video, which could be the key to breaking the case.” Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly said in a release issued by the FBI and the police department: “While published reports have repeatedly cited the early morning time of the attack and the lack of casualties, the fact is the bomber narrowly missed killing or injuring passers-by who can be seen clearly in the vicinity, moments before the blast.” Videos of the suspect in a gray sweatshirt and pants of an unknown color were not previously viewed by the public, authorities said, and a picture of the bomb will be used to jog the memories of anyone who might know something. The videos are grainy, and the bicyclist is a tiny figure in most of them. Even the bomber’s gender is unclear. The suspect rode a blue Ross bicycle, got off his bike, placed

(LA JUNTA, Colo.) — A tornado warning for Denver International Airport is over and no damage has been reported. Passengers had to take shelter in bathrooms and stairwells for about a half-hour Tuesday after the warning was issued. The National Weather Service said a confirmed tornado was spotted in the area. Television coverage showed the airport’s normally busy concourse was completely empty during the warning period. As the storm passed, police briefly blocked traffic from Interstate 70 to Pena Boulevard, which connects the interstate to the airport. Dark clouds blanketed parts of the horizon over the plains to the east. Severe thunderstorms could still produce some strong winds and hail in the area and across Colorado’s eastern plains.
(DETROIT) — Chrysler says it has resolved its differences with the government and will recall older Jeep Grand Cherokee and Liberty SUVs that could be at risk of a fuel tank fire. Earlier this month the company refused the government’s request to recall the Jeeps. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration contended that the gas tanks could rupture if hit from the rear, causing fires. NHTSA said 51 people had died in fiery crashes. But Chrysler says in a statement Tuesday that dealers will inspect the vehicles and upgrade the rear structure if needed to better handle low-speed crashes. The company maintains that the vehicles aren’t defective. The government had asked Chrysler to recall 2.7 million Jeep Grand Cherokees from model years 1993 through 2004 and Jeep Libertys from 2002 through 2007

One thing the U.S. military can do is draft reports. The Pentagon has released the services’ plans detailing how women are to be integrated into front-line combat units over the next couple of years. The reports are from the Army, the Navy, the Air Force, the Marines and the Special Operations Command. “I remain confident we will retain the trust and confidence of the American people by opening positions to women, while ensuring that all members entering these newly opened positions can meet the standards required to maintain our warfighting capability,” Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel says in his just-released letter urging the services to forward march toward their goal of putting women on the front lines. Not everyone agrees. “Department of Defense and military leaders are letting down the troops by moving ahead with ill-advised plans to order (not ‘allow’) women into physically-demanding direct ground combat positions,” says Elaine Donnelly of the independent Center for Military Readiness, a persistent opponent of opening up combat units to her gender. “Missions of these fighting teams, which attack the enemy with deliberate offensive action, are very different from the experiences of courageous military women who have served in harm’s way while exposed to incident-related or contingent combat in war zones since 9/11.” Sounds like some Marines Battleland knows.

(OGDEN, Utah) — A Utah man charged with attempted murder in the shooting of his father-in-law during a Father’s Day Mass has made his first court appearance. The 35-year-old Charles “Ricky” Jennings Jr. made a brief video appearance Tuesday in Ogden. Bail was set at $105,000, cash-only. He has been charged with attempted murder, two counts each of aggravated burglary and aggravated robbery and possession of a firearm by a restricted person. Police say Jennings fired one shot at the back of the head of 66-year-old James Evans during a Catholic Mass in Ogden Sunday. Jennings had walked into the church seconds earlier holding hands with his wife, the daughter of Evans. Jennings fled the church, stole a truck from a neighbor and was later caught near a highway after the truck ran out of gas. Evans is in critical condition but expected to survive.

(WASHINGTON) — Civil rights lawyers urged a federal judge to declare the New York Police Department’s widespread spying programs directed at Muslims to be unconstitutional, order police to stop their surveillance and destroy any records in police files. In a lawsuit filed Tuesday, the lawyers said the spying has hindered the ability of residents to freely practice their religion. It is the third significant legal action filed against the NYPD Muslim surveillance program since details of the spy program were revealed in a series of Associated Press reports in 2011 and 2012. The lawsuit said that Muslim religious leaders in New York have modified their sermons and other behavior so as not to draw additional police attention. The suit was filed against Mayor Michael Bloomberg, police commissioner Raymond Kelly and the deputy commissioner of intelligence, David Cohen. (MORE: NYPD vs. Muslims: Is an Entire Community Being Profiled?) The lawsuit, which accuses the city of violating the First and Fourteenth amendments, is the latest legal challenge to the activities of the NYPD Intelligence Division. A year ago, the California-based civil rights organization Muslim Advocates sued the NYPD over its counterterrorism programs. Earlier this year, civil rights lawyers urged a judge to stop the NYPD from routinely observing Muslims in restaurants, bookstores and mosques, saying the practice violates a landmark 1985 court settlement that restricted the kind of surveillance used against war protesters in the 1960s and ’70s. “Through the Muslim Surveillance Program, the NYPD has imposed an unwarranted badge of suspicion and stigma on law-abiding Muslim New Yorkers, including plaintiffs in this action,” according to the complaint, which was filed in federal court in Brooklyn on behalf of religious and community leaders, mosques, and a charitable organization. The plaintiffs are represented by the American Civil Liberties Union, the Creating Law Enforcement Accountability & Responsibility project at CUNY School of Law and the New York Civil Liberties Union. The NYPD did not immediately respond to a phone call and email asking for comment. The lawsuit describes a pattern of NYPD spying directed

The Pentagon will detail Tuesday when women will be eligible to train for and join the U.S. military’s most elite units, including Army Rangers and Navy SEALs. But it’s not those dates on the calendar – 2015 for Rangers and 2016 for SEALs — that are going to be the most important. These are the numbers to keep your eyes on: – How will separate physical-training requirements for men and women be changed to a single set that both men and women will have to pass to gain entry to such units. The Army will spend the next two years developing gender-neutral Ranger standards. The tougher the numbers, the smaller the number of women who will be eligible. Under a 1993 federal law, the defense secretary: (1) shall ensure that qualification of members of the Armed Forces for, and continuance of members of the Armed Forces in, that occupational career field is evaluated on the basis of common, relevant performance standards, without differential standards of evaluation on the basis of gender; (2) may not use any gender quota, goal, or ceiling except as specifically authorized by law; and (3) may not change an occupational performance standard for the purpose of increasing or decreasing the number of women in that occupational career field. – The calculation of such standards isn’t always clear-cut, as a May report from the Congressional Research Service noted: A plain reading of the term suggests that men and women would be required to meet the same physical standards in order to be similarly assigned. However, in the past, the Services have used this and similar terms to suggest that men and women must exert the same amount of energy in a particular task, regardless of the work that is actually accomplished by either. For example, the Air Force Fitness Test Scoring for males under 30 years of age requires males to run 1.5 miles in a maximum time of 13:36 (min.:secs.): the female maximum time is 16:22. A female who runs at this slower rate would actually
