A Kentucky pastor who starred in a reality TV show about snake-handling has died after being bitten by a poisonous snake.

Pentecostal pastor Jamie Coots, a third-generation “serpent handler,” believed that poisonous snakebites would not kill true believers if they were anointed by God. He died Saturday evening after refusing to be treated.

In his show Snake Salvation he pointed to a passage in the Bible that suggests venomous reptiles would not harm the pious, and he hope to one day pass on his church, “Full Gospel Tabernacle in Jesus Name”, to his adult son Little Cody.

Coots was given one year of probation in February 2013 for crossing into Tennessee with poisonous snakes.

If only snake handling wore more widespread, we could cure The Red State disease.

Just to let you know that  in Mark 16:18 where handling serpents is mentioned.-this was a  new Ending added to Mark by early Christians and is a forgery. So the guy died over a forged passage in the New Testament.  (Don't beleive everyhting you read)...We know it is  forged because it is not in the two oldest Greek New Testaments that we have. One at the British museum and one in the Vatican. The passage was added, word put in Christ's mouth so beleivers would go out and prreach to the whole world not just the people in israel.

What a shame he did not spend time reading other books than the Bible. "What to do if bitten by a venomous snake" would have been a good starter ......

Foolish presumption.......the devil tried to get Jesus to presumptuously act on Gods promises........

Luke 4:9-12..........

9-11 Then Satan took him to Jerusalem to a high roof of the Temple and said, “If you are the Son of God, jump off! For the Scriptures say that God will send his angels to guard you and to keep you from crashing to the pavement below!”

12 Jesus replied, “The Scriptures also say, ‘Do not put the Lord your God to a foolish test.’”

Jesus words were fulfilled in the apostle paul, who suffered a snake bite gathering sticks for a fire on his missionary journey. But Paul did not make a doctrine about it. It was a miracle that saved the apostles life. Paul didn't go around presumptuously picking up poisonous snakes after that..........

Acts 28:3,5.........

3 But when Paul had gathered a bundle of sticks and laid them on the fire, a viper came out because of the heat, and fastened on his hand.
5 But he shook off the creature into the fire and suffered no harm.

Yep, I'm guessing he also believed  the earth is only 6000 years old.

Suddenly there was a miracle (slight rise in average IQ in Kentucky ) This preacher was famous in another remarkable event when he walked over the bridge from Ohio and raised the average IQ on both sides of the Ohio river simultaneously.

Unfortunately most priests and preachers don't handle snakes.

@teknodum I don't think it is religion that makes them lose their minds - I believe their minds are already lost. Scientists know that the greater lack of connectivity between the 2 hemispheres of the brain increases dramatically the preponsity towards religion.......

@harte.ryan You do realize that the Darwin Awards are just an urban legend, right?  They aren't real.
