A woman accused of murdering a pregnant friend and cutting the dead woman’s baby out of the womb was found guilty by a Massachusetts jury Wednesday.

Julie Corey, 39, was convicted in Worcester Superior Court for the 2009 murder of Darlene Haynes, who was 23 and eight months pregnant at the time of her death, the Associated Press reports. Prosecutors said Corey, who did not testify, beat and strangled Haynes to death, cut the baby from Haynes’ womb and told her boyfriend and family members that the baby was hers after she suffered a miscarriage three months before the murder.

Attorneys for Corey plan to appeal the verdict.
