Suspicious Powders Found in Super Bowl Hotels

But early tests indicated they were benign substances like pudding mix

Authorities were investigating reports Friday of suspicious white powders mailed to hotels across the street from where the Super Bowl will take place Sunday, but police said early tests indicated the substances might be benign products including pudding mix, baking soda and corn starch.

The powders were mailed to hotels including the EconoLodge, the Hampton Inn and the Holiday Inn Express, all in the immediate vicinity of MetLife Stadium just outside New York City, according to Detective John Cleary of the Carlstadt Police Department in New Jersey.

“I just learned that they suspect it to be some kind of starch element, reported to me to be pudding mix,” Cleary told TIME. “I don’t know what flavor, though.

When I first saw the pictures I was thinking cornstarch, myself,” he added. “It’s more of a yellowish color.”

Another suspicious letter was sent to former New York Mayor Rudolph Giuliani’s office but did not appear to be dangerous, the Associated Press reports, and at least five hotels received suspicious powders in the mail. A letter sent to a hotel in East Rutherford, N.J., was found to contain cornstarch, Mayor James Cassella told CNN.

Super Bowl XLVIII is taking place in East Rutherford on Sunday under tight security both in nearby New York City and at the Meadowlands complex that includes MetLife Stadium.

It looks like some hotel owners refused to endorse Chris Christie during the last election.
