A wide swath of the southern United States will be hit by a cold snap this week, as a storm moves in and brings with it a triple threat of snow, ice and freezing temperatures.

With forecasters expecting snow and ice from Texas to Virginia by Wednesday as precipitation meets the cold air already hovering over the region, officials from several states have already asked drivers to stay off the roads and ride it out indoors, the Associated Press reports. Some schools and government offices in Mississippi are closed in anticipation, and snow had already begun falling in the upper northwest corner of Alabama by Tuesday morning. Most of Georgia was already placed under a winter storm watch  through Wednesday, the AP reports.

The College of Charleston, where the high was 69 degrees on Monday, canceled classes and activities for Tuesday as a “precautionary measure” ahead of the snow expected to begin falling on Wednesday morning. The barrier islands of North Carolina’s Outer Banks may see up to eight inches of snow.

Throughout the region, residents are being told to stock up on canned foods, especially nonperishable items, as well as water bottles and diapers for babies if needed.
