One student at Widener University in Chester, Pa. has been shot, according to a message posted online by the school.

“An individual has been shot in the vicinity of Schwartz Athletic Center,” reads Widener University’s message. “His family has been notified and is with the student at this time. We are not releasing the name of the injured student at this time.”

Officials say an unknown gunman shot the student sitting in the parking lot of Widener University’s athletic center Monday night. He now lies in a critical but stable condition at Crozer-Chester Medical Center after surgery. The attack is not believed to have been a random act of violence.

Widener University’s Chester campus, 14 miles south of Philadelphia, Pa., was locked down immediately following the attack, and students have been urged to remain indoors until 6 a.m. as officers search for the assailant. Chester Police Chief Joseph Bail assured the public that a strong police presence will remain on campus when classes resume Tuesday.
