Dozens of Cruise Passengers Fall Ill to Stomach Virus

Likely due to bug spread through food and water-contaminated surfaces

A four-night Royal Caribbean cruise ended on a queasy note Friday, when dozens of passengers contracted a stomach illness that caused gastrointestinal issues including vomiting and diarrhea.

Of the 2,500 passengers on the ship, 66 were affected by what the company said is likely norovirus, a contagious bug spread through food, water or contaminated surfaces, CNN reports. Two crew members on the Royal Caribbean International ship, which docked in Miami Friday, were affected as well.

The incident is the latest in a series that has hurt the cruise industry, including a fire on the Royal Caribbean’s Grandeur of the Seas cruise ship last May and an engine room fire on the Carnival Triumph in February.

Ha!  Our Caribbean Princess cruise from 1/4 to 1/11 ended the same way.  We did not make the news.  In fact, my friend and I both caught it.  Why didn't we make the news?

Cruising is great fun and enjoyable, unless you get sick or of course fall over board. Keep your hands clean, you are a floating city with thousands of guest and crew members fro all over the world. Those crew members are the problem.   I have been on 23 cruises with no issues, all great ,but you never know. The crew from some countries idea of clean is different from most American standards. But cruising is great so take the chance and enjoy.

@Channah Not enough people complained to the right sources. Never had that problem on over 20 cruises, guess We have been lucky as a family.

@Openminded1 Glad you liked your cruises.  I really didn't.  The ship was so large and we seem to do nothing but walk and walk to get to where we wanted to go.  I have cruised on a 900 passenger ship (the Mediterranean) and it was great...a perfect size, plus we could get into ports a large ship cannot get into.  Personally, I'd prefer to fly into whatever countries I want to see and spend days exploring then all.  I have missed very few countries that touch the Mediterranean (Europe, Mideast, and North Africa) and those places are a real pleasure to visit....but, I will fly in and then go by car or train or bus.

@Channah @Openminded1 Good points, smaller ships are better, and you do have more time in different places if you fly in. But cruises for me is about relaxing on a balcony with a good book and ocean breezes , a great cup of coffee or wine. Then eating when you want and how you want, plus some entertainment etc. You get a lot for your bang.
