Three people were killed in a shooting at an Indiana grocery store on Wednesday night, including the gunman who was reportedly killed by police.

The shooting took place at a large supermarket in Elkhart, Indiana, a city of 50,000 near South Bend, about 100 miles east of Chicago. Police were called to the scene at Martin’s Supermarket around 10 p.m. and found an armed man in the store, Indiana State Police Trooper Brooks Shirk told CNN. According to CNN affiliate WXIN, the man, who had already gunned down two people in the store, fired at officers with a semi-automatic handgun. Officers then fatally shot the gunman.

Police found the bodies of two women, one shopper and one employee, about a dozen aisles apart in the grocery store. Officials said it’s unclear whether there was any connection between the gunman and the two women, and a motive for the shooting is not clear. Indiana State Police Sgt. Trent Smith said the gunman, who was also wielding a knife in addition to the gun, was aiming his firearm at another shopper when police shot him. According to WSBT, there were only about 12 people in the store at the time of the shooting.

“You never know why this happens,” Smith said, “You just can’t explain these things a lot of the times.”
