Ohio Executes Prisoner Using New Method

The condemned prisoner reportedly took 15 minutes to die

Ohio executed condemned prisoner Dennis McGuire Thursday with the first use of the controversial two-drug lethal injection method in the U.S. The condemned killer appeared to gasp several times during his prolonged execution, the Associated Press reports.

He made several long snorting sounds over the course of the 15 minutes it took him to die, according to the AP. His stomach rose and fell several times, and he opened and shut his mouth. It was one of the longest executions in the state since Ohio resumed capital punishment in 1999.

Ohio is just the first of many states that will experiment with different drugs to replace sodium thiopental, which has been widely used in lethal injections nationally for years. But the usual three-drug combination is becoming harder to obtain, so states are looking for an alternative.

Ohio’s Department of Corrections confirmed they used the painkiller hydromorphone and the sedative midazolam to execute McGuire. The time of death was 10:53 a.m, and executions usually start at 10am. It’s unclear when executioners administered the drugs.

Lawyers for McGuire, who was sentenced to death for the 1989 rape and murder of 22-year-old Joy Stewart, argued that the use of the new cocktail of drugs was unconstitutional, because McGuire might be conscious as he suffocates to death.

“In the old three-drug combination, each drug was being used for what it was designed for,” Dr. Jonathan Groner, a professor of clinical surgery at the Ohio State University who studies lethal injections, told TIME this week. “But Ohio is taking drugs that are normally used for things like a colonoscopy, and they’re giving massive overdoses to kill people. They’re using them for their toxic side effects.”

Joy Stewart was a 22 year old newlywed who was 8mths pregnant at the time she was kidnapped, taken to the woods and raped. After which they were stabbed to death her and her unborn baby. If that is not sad enough what makes it worse is most of the sympathy is going to the murderer because he received the death penalty. There are so many bleeding hearts out there. So many people are so confused about morality it is no wonder we are in this mess!

Not having the death penalty cheapens the life that was taken. Joy didn't have 25 more years, did she? Instead of years and years of one appeal after another just take him out back and shoot the S.O.B.

Isn't there something in the States that says 'cruel and unusual punishment' is against the law?

I'm sorry, but after reading was he was CONVICTED of doing to that poor 22 year old pregnant girl, excuse me if I don't care if he suffered on his way out....He died no more inhumane then his victim. She was stabbed abused, and terrorized. I hope he felt even half the fear she felt in her last moments. Sick bastar*.

It is ok he was choking. I am sure as he was raping that poor woman and then murdered her he was not humane about it.

I say turn him over to the victim's family, if they so choose. If someone did this to my daughter, he would be begging me to slit his throat long before I was finished with him.

why am i not surprised that only US (and JAPAN), are the only ones still using the death penalty in the liberal developed countries...
it's vindictive and barbaric..
the US has  the highest rate of murders and rape in developed western countries...shows how much death penalty works..
also, these gruesome murders and rapes are usually a function of low income individuals...why doesn't the liberal higher ups try to ascertain the reasons behind THAT..

If the death penalty is such a great deterrent, why does the US have so much higher of a murder rate than many other western countries that don't have it?

For all you sympathizers:

Dennis Mcguire raped and murdered Joy Stewart, 22, in 1989. He was convicted of kidnap, rape and murder in 1994.The autopsy revealed

that Joy had been stabbed twice. One wound, located above the left collarbone,
caused no significant injury. The critical wound was a four-and-a-half-inch-deep
cut in the throat, which completely severed the carotid artery and jugular vein.
The doctor determined that Joy was alive when she received the wound, and that
such a wound could have been caused by a single-edged blade shorter than four
and a half inches, due to “how soft and moveable the tissues are in the neck.” The
autopsy also revealed abrasions around the neck, impressed with the cloth pattern
of Joy’s shirt.
The coroner’s office also took vaginal, oral, and anal swabs. The coroner
found an abundant amount of sperm on the anal swab, some sperm on the vaginal
swab, and none on the oral swab. The coroner indicated that sperm could be
detected in the vagina for days or sometimes weeks after ejaculation; however,
sperm in the rectum could be detected for a lesser time “because the environment
is fairly hostile for sperm, and * * * a bowel movement * * * usually will purge
the rectum of any sperm.”McGuire claimed that Richardson then pulled a
knife on her, and forced her to have oral sex with him. McGuire then said
Richardson anally sodomized her because he “couldn’t have regular sex with her
because she was pregnant.” He also said Richardson stabbed her “in the shoulder
bone” and “cut her throat.”

Does anyone know how long it took him to rape and murder 22-year-old Joy Stewart.  Do we know how long it took Joy Stewart to die?  How this man died is irrelevant .... The world is a better place without him .... Peace to family and friends of Joy Stewart.

I'm sure someone could invent some method of TMS that targets the brain stem. Flip a switch and the brain is liquid. Reusable, clean, and potentially humane... Well, at least as humane as the guillotine was compared to an axe. The death penalty is quite unnecessary anyway. Making short work of an offender only shows that life is as cheap as the offender charged his victims. Searching for literally cheaper alternatives makes the sting all the more ironic.

Understandable that his lawyers (why does he have multiple lawyers anyway?) would argue cruel and unusual punishment, but a death sentence is supposed to be a deterrent, not just putting a lame horse out of its misery.

I'm sure the electric chair saved many many more lives than it took because people didn't want to sit in the **** thing.

I don't mind giving the prisoner a choice. I would pick a firing squad if I could. That would be better than the 15 min thing.

Buh-Bye!!!

Stabbing would have been cheaper. Seriously, why don't they use the Doggie no-go juice???? It seems to do the trick on dogs, so have a veterinarian give him a triple dose of it, and pay a $100 vet bill.

Eye for an eye, maybe they should have simulated rape then murdered him in the same way?  I bet the network ratings would he off the charts!

@James007 The US is better at collecting the info. than most other countries. The rape count 1st place by population goes to South Africa; 2nd Norway! Check it out and get back to me to correct me if I am wrong.

@James007They did, then they suggested programs that help low income families and the mentally ill. You then asked who would pay for it and called them socialists. Moron.

@firefly212just because anyone can have a weapon in your country. Here in France we have a low rate of murders, not because the death penalty doesn't exist, but because so few people have a weapon.

HateToSayItbut
HateToSayItbut

@MCWe already have that method. In fact hanging uses that exact process of severing the brainstem. Shooting someone in the "T zone" also destroys the brainstem and instantly kills. yet both of the are considered terribly inhumane... not do to the pain they cause the victim but because they cause us discomfort to see it or think of it.

Even after a death such as this the body will still reflexively make choking/painful noises. And the body itself would be in great pain but without a brain to tell it to there is no real concern is there.

@Feth312Why waste bullets? One AR-15 shot to the head would do the trick,

HateToSayItbut
HateToSayItbut

@harry_vederci@firefly212 Actually I believe it may have more to do with the overall makeup of french society. The violence rate within large metropolitan areas if France are comparable (but not nearly as high) but the large majority of population in france is in what we in the US would call suburbs or the countryside. This is accurate?

@iluv9mm@Feth312 In an execution by a firing squad only one real bullet is used. The rest fire blanks. They don't reveal which gun has the real bullet though.
