Daisy Coleman was a cheerleader at Maryville High School in Maryville, Missouri. Matthew Barnett was on the football team.

The teenager at the center of a controversial rape case that shook a small Missouri town and drew national headlines pleaded guilty to a single count of misdemeanor child endangerment Thursday.

The charge against Matthew Barnett, 19, came two years after then-14-year-old Daisy Coleman accused the high-profile high school football player in Maryville, Mo., of raping her. Coleman and her family faced intense backlash from people in the community, and a local prosecutor initially dropped felony sexual assault charges, before national outrage over whether a high school athlete was getting special treatment prompted the local prosecutor to ask an outside prosecutor to reexamine the case.

That led to the misdemeanor charge Thursday, the Kansas City Star reports. Prosecutors say Barnett, who was then 17, endangered a semi-conscious Coleman when he allegedly left her barefoot in the frozen yard of her home hours before the sun rose.

Barnett pled guilty to the charge Thursday afternoon as part of a deal with prosecutors, according to the Kansas City Star. He was sentenced to two years of probation and a four-month suspended jail term.

Coleman, now 16, attempted suicide earlier this week.

She drank alcohol from her own house.. Why do they want to tarnish a boy's image just for fame and fortune. She was not forced to drink, no one held her nose and poured stuff in her mouth. Why should her mum let her have access to alcohol at 14. When you are drunk you can sleep with almost anyone.  The system should let people be responsible for their actions. Her mother too (bad parenting) , the girl was partially drunk from home. Take responsibility for your actions irresponsible mother and daughter.

I just don't believe he raped her

With the conclusion of the case I guess Daisy Coleman and her mother wouldn't have had as many offers to sell interviews. Did that contribute to her "suicide attempt"? If so, does that make the news media that paid them for interviews partially responsible for this latest "tragedy"? Should the news media be "held responsible" for cutting off her financial support.

It is no more ridiculous than the general public blindly believing every word this girl and her mother speak. When is the book deal going to get done? Let's keep bring in Special Prosecutors until we finally get one that completely ignores the lack of proof and sends the boy to prison.

It seems best for the U.S. DOJ to get involved in cases like this.  the local police / justice system just doesn't seem able to handle it

Thanks to 20/20. For showing the world how corrupt a town and the kids and parents involved are! This reeks of irresponsible self-serving parents lobbing a small town to turn its back on justice. What about a rape kit? And the rubbers? Destroyed that shows cover up! Bye his mom and dad? What about underage drinking? How about the other boys involved in the cover up? Let’s not forget the responsibility of a parent? Where were they while SO MANY kids were over? LETS not forget GRAMMPA what about his influence? What about the treats and horrible things said why are they allowed to evade Justice? Really and their home burned???? All the parents should be so proud of your kids your town for lack of LAW much less justice and being a positive influence!......And if Daisy would have died?????? Maryville is a JOKE of a town! SHAME ON YOU ALL!!!!!!

Please continue to fight for jail for all the kids involved!!!! write you congress demand honor and justice for Daisy!

Daisy I am sorry our system failed you! But this just proves corruption. :) Keep your voice load never forget! Fight back don’t give in!!!!! There are allot of people who care for you. AND WANT AND DEMAND JUSTICE FOR YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

If you know Daisy, direct her to this or copy this to her…..

Thanks Tim K.

If child endangerment is the charge and he admitted to having sex with her then he should be charged with having sex with a child which is a crime in most states. a + b = c

If Daisy's father broke Matthew's neck, I volunteer for jury duty......................Not guilty.

Why isn't there enough evidence to charge Matthew Barnett with the rape of Daisy Coleman? The October 2013 Kansas City Star article detailed a WHOLE lot of evidence suggesting further charges were warranted.

What changed??

@Jessica2089 Riiight.. And her friend made it up that they were carrying her around naked while she was passed out?

A 19 year old getting a 14 year old black out drunk and having sex with her deserves far more punishment than this man got.

By the way, how is it "consensual" when she's passed out?

Anyway, good job being a scumbag rapist-defender Jessica!! You're the reason these satanic perverts are possible!

Why don't you believe he raped her? Are you intimately involved in the case? Or, are you a Burnett family friend? Perhaps you were one of Daisy's taunters in the months after she pressed charges? The way they left her that night is horrendous enough that a tarnished reputation is deserved.

@socol They were both kids, 17 and 14. People should view it from both sides

Unfortunately, Daisy's father died in a car accident several years ago when Daisy was a young girl. The whole story is just sad...

@FreidaPotter The story stated that much of the evidence "disappeared." Although the video of her rape was captured on cell phones and passed around the school, when the time came, no one could locate it. Really? This is the saddest case and I wish there was a way to tell that poor girl that it will pass and she will move on. The cruelty of friends and strangers is disgusting and many in that town need to be held accountable. What about his parents for hosting a party where minors drank alcohol? There are plenty of parents who have been charged for this...why not in this case? Where were the teachers and school authorities when it came to policing the school? Shame on every single dirty disgusting one of them. The lawyers are exactly what lawyer jokes are about...both sides. Her awful lawyer had her to blame from the beginning so a fair trial was never an option.

I would dearly love for those actors on that commercial about "no more" turning a blind eye, or blaming a girl because she flirted, or didn't leave an abusive husband before he killed her, to go to that girl and tell her it WILL be okay. I wish every one of them would walk the streets of that sick town and let every citizen there know they are to blame in this.

It's weird how the whole town is sick like you say.  Not even one good person, out of a population of 17000.  Can you believe it?

It's a good thing we have people like you and Freida.  We need more people to simply not stand for unjust things!

Oh, by the way, while you're busy condemning an entire town, take a look at your own newspaper.  Maybe you can find something close by you that you simply won't tolerate anymore!

@MarkRobinson2 Look up Ken Rex McElroy. These people have a history of giving in to bullies for too long until it comes to a head.
