Satanist Monument

Satanic Temple / AP

This artist’s rendering provided by the Satanic Temple shows a proposed monument that the New York–based Satanic group wants to place at the Oklahoma state capitol.

The Satanic church that applied for a permit to erect a monument to Satan next to the Ten Commandments monument at the Oklahoma state-capitol building has unveiled its proposed design.

The 7-ft.-tall (2.1 m) sculpture would feature Satan depicted in the form of Baphomet, a bearded, goat-headed, winged hominid with horns seated on a throne beneath a pentagram with two smiling children to either side.

The group responsible for the proposed monument, the New York–based Satanic Temple, applied to place a monument to Satan at the capitol building in Oklahoma City after the Oklahoma ACLU sued to have a Ten Commandments statue — erected in 2012 — removed on the grounds that its presence discriminated against other religions, the Associated Press reports.

In addition to representing the Satanic religion, the monument “will also have a functional purpose as a chair where people of all ages may sit on the lap of Satan for inspiration and contemplation,” said Satanic Temple spokesperson Lucien Greaves.

Besides the Satanic Temple, a number of other groups have made requests to erect monuments, including a Hindu group, an animal-rights group and the Church of the Flying Spaghetti Monster. The Oklahoma Capitol Preservation Commission subsequently issued a moratorium on new requests pending resolution of the ACLU lawsuit.

I love the fact that someone is challenging the state of Oklahoma on this.  If you are going to allow one religious monument on public land at the capital, you have to allow others.  That it is Satanists who have proposed a monument is great.  The Constitution is at its most beautiful when it stands to protect that thing many find most ugly.  It HAS to work that way or it is meaningless.

Just as I don't believe in religious mumbo jumbo I would not find a statue like that offensive. Sure I don't think it's very pretty but just as I have to tolerate seeing ugly and fat people walking around publicly I don't see why a statue like that should be banned. On the other hands... I hope they would add some fun effect like a speakers that mumbles some eerie chants or eyes that glow.

This is just so incredibly stupid... Satan is a Jewish deity... this Decadent Goat of Khar is Baphomet... a Hebrew impostor invented by Eliphas Levi...

Judaic Bolshevist Mammonism (Baphomet) = Mahomet (Muslim Brotherhood)

Two metrosexual hobgoblins from desert cult religions.

All men are born of a woman.

At least the Koran allows a man to have four wives, which is more natural than Judaic monogamy... what a bunch of Khazars...

This is not a legit Church of Satan proposal nor a legit image. This was concocted from an ex member who was kicked out. His mane was Shane Bugbee.

Below I have attached a letter written by Magus Peter H. Gilmore in response to this incident as well as a link to the article.

"The statue is crudely designed and ugly to me and seems pedophilic, since the caduceus between the goat’s legs is a phallic symbol. Having children reaching towards a being with an exposed symbolic penis seems to imply that Satanism represents the same situation which has plagued the Roman Catholic and other Christian churches for some time: child abuse. The image appears to show the goat’s left hand possibly caressing the male child. Revolting.

"The Church of Satan requires members to be legally adult and Satanist parents teach their children comparative religion and philosophy so that our children may decide which religion or philosophy would suit their own natures. We do not indoctrinate our offspring, or anyone else’s, and that statue could be seen as symbolic of indoctrination, which is manifestly counter to our philosophy.

"It occurs to me that the efforts by the perpetrators of this proposal may be intended as a means for making Satanism appear foolish and just as dysfunctional and irrational as we secularists view most other religions to be."

Christ being depicted on a cross can be an unsettling image, and SHOULD NOT be on government buildings, AND IS NOT hence the the alternate symbol of two intersecting lines. But intentionally stealing and imposing imagery that depicts murderous demonic forces in thousands of Hollywood horror movies is supposed to be OK. I guess they believe that the "old goat" unfairly gets a bad rap in movie-land. Yep, I knew that I had seen this all too "symbolic goat" imagery somewhere before. I'll bet if they used a swastika it would be shot down by most everyone here in this forum in a heartbeat. In fact I may have seen this creature with a swastika depicted on it's forehead somewhere before.

There are no depictions of this image in any Holy Book that I have ever seen. And, if this is just a quote "joke" or "jab" in protest and rebellion at sincere Christian's. by what are really just "Atheists" who don't believe in a God, than that alone makes this so called designated "religion" a farce. It should be ruled invalid on those grounds alone. I know of genuine "Wiccan's" who use the pentacle to represent their "sincere" pagan beliefs representing elements, but it's not incorporated for ulterior motives and shock value.

Keep in mind, the "swastika" was a stolen symbol from the Hindu religion that was perverted and used for ulterior motives. Even if you don't buy into the concept of good and evil, there are sinister forces, that do exist in the physical realm and use symbolism as a tool. Another example being 20th Century burning crosses (again stealing a religious symbol for ulterior gain) that were used by a few ignorant racist, anti Catholic, anti Semites to scare and intimidate.

Why is the VERY subjective belief that this monument is 'ugly' being used to try and justify disallowing it? Aesthetics are ridiculously subjective.

Frankly, I find depictions of an injured, anorexic, homeless-looking man bound to a cross to be "ugly."

They pushed to allow religious symbols on government property. Hope they enjoy.

see absolutely nothing wrong with them putting this up or any of the other groups mentioned putting up one as well.  one can judge any belief system all they want, they just dont have a right to censor it.  its either none or all, no special cases for any one particular.

I am curious what the response would be from the Christians if other religions attempted to put up statues. Say a big menora or some kind of muslim statue.

ClayBeeler

Guess what, the argument is over. In America all religions are equal and will be either equally represented or not represented at all. This means that if you disagree with that then you are not an American plain and simple. Doesn't matter if you like it or not that is what this country was built on and what I fought in 2 wars to protect. So if you think that the christian monument deserves to be there more than any other monument then you are less of a person than the rest of us and the enlightened of us will all look down on you.

@ChrisDawson  The main issue with this lies with which form of Satanism we're talking about. LaVeyan Satanism, which doesn't preach a belief in the devil but rather in the idea of being self-serving and ruthless, is a viable religion. Theistic Satanism, on the other hand, is the religion of those wishing, intentionally, to be offensive. While I believe that the burden lies on the offended to suck it up and get over it, rather than the offender to not be offensive, there is nothing to be gained from lending support to a group that is dedicated to being offensive. An a similar note, the Church of the Flying Spaghetti Monster does not deserve a statue, as they are a clear parody, nor do the Westboro Baptist Church (whose statue would likely be of God killing gays and soldiers) or the much over-played Jedi "religion" (who would likely put up a statue of Obi-Wan Kenobi). Keep in mind - I'm agnostic (the true meaning of the word - I accept that we can't prove or disprove any given religion so I don't try to), not attached to any particular religion.

Satanism is Jewish like the Ten Commandments.

@ClayBeeler You are quite wrong about what freedoms you fought to protect. The Constitution and Bill of Rights never say "all religions are equal". They say the government shall not establish any religion, which by standing court precedent has been interpreted as setting up a "wall between church and state". Not quite the same as "all religions are equal".

There is absolutely no good reason this statue should be erected anywhere near the State Capitol building -- unless the legislators want to admit that they have been following satanic promptings all this time they have been legistating;)

StillTheGreatestNation

@ClayBeeler At least you come across as consistent. I'm guessing you're not a big fan of flag burning or urinating on it either. Most likely cause you fought for this country. But, when someone does that it's just not in good taste. I think most Christians are upset over the fact that it's a goat! C'mon a goat. Really! After this, the next group will come along and want something even more ridiculously looking. How about a grasshopper with an aliens head. Where does it end? I think it's more about taste. After all Christians did not erect a statue of Christ himself on the cross. That's more the point here. Maybe they can go back to the old image of a human looking devil with little horns and a red pointy tail. He could be smiling with pitchfork in hand. But a goat just seems as inappropriate as a crucified image.

DMann171
DMann171

@epitygxanwn @ClayBeeler It does in fact say that government shall make no law establishing a religion. But, if they were to allow for a christian monument to be erected and not this one that establishes legal precedent of Christianity over Satanism which, combined with other laws, will create a legal hierarchy of religions in our country. This essentially establishes one religion as being the main or legal religion of the United States and therefore violates the constitution. Therefore not allowing this monument would be unconstitutional.

ClayBeeler

@StillTheGreatestNation @ClayBeeler Ugh. Thanks to the page refreshing I just lost my very long response to you so I will try to rewrite it. First off just let me say that I don't care about either side in this argument because I am not religious. But what I do care about is how most of the Christians I have seen posting on this site have a sickening belief that they should have more rights than people of other religions and they think that this is a Christian nation. This is a democracy that happens to have a religious majority of christians but that is all. The founding fathers knew that government and religion should always be separate.

I highly doubt that they are upset because the statue is a goat. It is all about what they personally think the goat represents.  I say think because most Christians only have the biblical viewpoint which is quite different from how the Satanic Temple portrays themselves. The design isn't the point of this issue though. This issue is about whether all religions are being treated equally or if Christianity is being unfairly represented by a government that should be impartial. Even though the design is offensive to some people doesn't matter because the 10 commandments themselves are quite offensive to many other people.

I would rather have the commandments statue taken down than this being put up, but until that happens then the only way for Oklahoma to remain impartial is to allow any and all religions to erect a statue on the capitol grounds. I don't hate Christians or atheist or satanists or anyone just because of their religious preference but I do hate all of these people on here that think they are better than anyone else just because of who they do or don't believe in.

I got my point across but my first attempted post that got cleared before I posted it was much better written.

Ben Dragon Sipariş duyuyorum... Satanism is a Jewish cult... the Synagogue of Sodomy... it is lipstick on a gay kosher pig.

The Koran allows a man to have four wives and is more consistent with this truth of nature... all men are born of a woman.

If anyone is anti-woman, it is the gay leftist L'Internationale... they infest the Western education bureaucracies and the Western media like AIDS.

Nothing is more misogynist than a homosexual... it is all about dominance and jealousy over a woman's procreative powers.

@DMann171 @epitygxanwn @ClayBeeler You may make your claim sound plausible with phrases like "it does in fact", but that does not make your claim 'fact'. The real fact is that there is NO obligation for the Courts to accept your claim that it would "establish legal precedent" or "legal hierarchy of religions".

@PuckPal @ClayBeeler Appreciate the reasonable comment. Just on a personal note it is Marine, not soldier, but I got the point lol. That would be preferable to only allowing one monument but I would still rather see government and religion kept separate. Even artistic taste is in the eye of the beholder. I don't personally care for the goat statue but I bet there are plenty of people who would like it. I have seen weirder things. I just wish more people would realize this isnt a Christian vs "Satanists" issue but a constitutional issue.

PuckPal

@ClayBeeler @ClayBeeler Point well made Soldier. I kind of like the Idea of putting up one large monument with many religions represented symbolically. It would bring together rather than divide.  All INCLUSIVE with room to grow. This would clearly stand against a ONE WORLD/ ONE ALL/ BE ALL/ FALSE RELIGION that could potentially force us and the entire world to conform to it or be cut off.  If we don't stand up for something we're bound to fall for anything.

The only trouble that may arise out of this concept is what faith is going to be engraved first, or at the top of the list. At least this concept is truly American and wouldn't be offensive to anyone.

But seriously, a hideously looking goat??? Would you feel comfortable putting that gawdy thing in your front yard at any other time than for Halloween? Let alone a State Capitol? We have by-laws in my city that won't permit business's to erect large tacky looking lit up signs. For example, the oldMcDonald's Golden Arches, or Over sized Neon Burger King signs, or a Huge tacky Uncle Joe's Carpet & Tile sign that can be spotted a mile away.
