Disgraced Teacher Mary Kay Letourneau Jailed Again

Teacher who had affair with a pupil was briefly imprisoned for driving without a license

The former school teacher whose sexual relationship with her 12-year-old student shocked America in 1997 was briefly jailed Sunday night after driving without a license.

Mary Kay Letourneau, 51, failed to appear in court for a suspended driver’s license case in Seattle, and was jailed Sunday and released Monday afternoon on $5,000 bond.

Letourneau was an elementary school teacher and mother of four children when she began an affair with Vili Fualaau in 1995. After a relative of her husband tipped off the police in March 1997, Letourneau pled guilty to second-degree child rape and served six months in jail, and gave birth to a daughter. Although her plea bargain prohibited her from contacting Fualaau, she became pregnant by him a second time in 1998 and was given a seven-and-a-half-year sentence. After her release Letourneau married Fualaau, who was by then 22.

If the boy didn't file a complaint, who are we to decide for them? There are people on Earth STILL who argue against multi-racial marriages? You judge that also?  By that measure, everyone who has kids who divorce should be jailed for "traumatizing" them? Or maybe society should sue parents who raise criminals? Hell, anything but missionary sex position used to be a crime? I think there are still a couple states where the age of marriage consent is 14 and in some other states, cousins can marry - again, why draw the line unless someone files a complaint?

This should not be a story now. But I always wondered what she saw in a 12 year old boy. She was no better then any pedi, He was not good looking so we have to assume he was hung at 12 and she wanted to teach him what to do with it, her way. she is and was a freak. She his a molester just like any man would be in a reverse role.

How innocent we were, back when a female teacher having sex with one of her students shocked us.

She did not begin an affair in 1995 as you state, she raped a 12 year old. For TWO YEARS- then served a 6 month sentence.

It was a terrible crime, children should be safe at school.. If a twelve year old girl was impregnated by her male teacher, He would still be in prison.  Old news, but still scary. Children have to go to school and they should be safe from pedophiles.

I love the headlines whenever this woman is in the News. "Pedophile" is the best one. There was never a group of boys she diddled. It was just this one, and she married her "victim", oh, and she has kids with him.

Maybe it's time to get over it.

Who cares?  Driving without a license. Why is that a story? Why should we care enough to be informed about it? Editor - get a life.

The persistence of the relationship between these two makes one wonder if jailing Mary Kay the second time was a foolish effort to prevent these lovers from being together. While sex with children is difficult to accept under any circumstances, these two seem to have developed a genuine love affair. Will Mary Kay be identified as a child molester for the rest of her life, no matter what the situation? It's hard to see what driving without a license has to do with her choice of marital partner. Is continuing to identify her with something she did years ago like identifying someone in the LGT community as such? A black, brown or pink person as such? She has paid for her crimes. Let's leave this woman and her family alone!

I believe her name is Mary Kay Fualaau now, as she married her former student and took his name in 2004.

@JoeBelkin No concern for her husband and children from her marriage?  This woman's choices are unconscionable. She has hurt many people, she can't control herself, obviously, she keeps going to jail.

@JoeBelkin  I take it that you've never been a teacher.  As one who has taught, I've seen up-close-and-personal just how intimidated some students, including males, are of their instructors.  Years ago, a math teacher at our school convinced female students to come to one-on-one meetings after school, for the sole purpose of trying to persuade them to get intimate with him.  After a couple students and their parents reported him, he was investigated and fired, and to my knowledge, never taught again.

This may come as a shock to you, but many students want nothing to do with sleeping with their teachers, and not every teacher is as ethical as you think.  I've known teachers who were accused of inappropriate behavior towards students of the opposite sex during class ---- something I've also witnessed as a student myself ---- and I've heard of teachers elsewhere who used subtle threats regarding grades to coax students into private meetings, just "to get to know them better".

Teachers need to have reasonable restrictions placed on them, because they are authority figures and a small percentage of them can't handle that power very well.  And honestly, any teacher who's interested in a 12-year-old needs counseling, not encouragement; I certainly didn't understand love or relationships when I was that young.

@UsedtobeFishfry This is a married woman with 4 children, not just some loose single woman who thinks she might also be a school teacher.

@spookiewriter And ruined the lives of her husband and 4 children. Marrying the "victim" doesn't cure the crime both legally and morally.

@spookiewriter  You're a sick freak for excusing child rape just because the victim later decided to marry her.  So if someone rapes your child, would you say, "Let's wait and see if they get married later"?

@opine "Who cares?" Well apparently you had some interest in the juicy details or you would not have opened the story to read it. But when you did open it and the story lacked the intensely juicy details that you apparently crave, you decided to rag the editor (I believe you actually meant writer) and charge him to "get a life." Rather than being hypocritical about it, why didn't you just complain that the story failed to give you a rise to the level of the National Enquirer and then your comment would have been more relevant?

P.S. You do like to read the tabloids, don't you?

@anti-government  Please tell me you don't have kids.  You seem to be fine with kids getting raped as long as they later marry their rapists.

@anti-governmentI agree but dammit! we don't want to leave people alone! we want them in big glossy paged magazines that dish us all the dirt. You seem far too intelligent to not know that.
