After nearly 12 years in litigation, New York City financial firm Cantor Fitzgerald has settled its lawsuit with American Airlines over the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks for $135 million.
Cantor, which had its headquarters in the top floors of the North Tower of the World Trade Center, lost 658 employees after American Airlines Flight 11 crashed into the tower on 9/11. In 2004, Cantor sued American for $1 billion, claiming that the airline was negligent for failing to detect and stop the hijackers who ultimately crashed the plane into the building.
Cantor was one of the hardest-hit companies on 9/11. Nearly three out of four of its New York-based employees were killed in the attacks, and according to the New York Times, half of the those victims left behind children and more than three dozen widows were pregnant at the time.
The judge presiding over the lawsuit still has to approve the settlement, and a hearing is scheduled for January 13.
