James "Whitey" Bulger

Convicted killer James “Whitey” Bulger must pay $6 million to the family of one of his victims, a federal judge has ruled.

Bulger, the once fearsome Boston crime boss, was ordered Friday by U.S. District Judge Denise J. Casper to pay the money to relatives of Oklahoma businessman Roger Wheeler, who was gunned down in 1981, the Boston Globe reports. But the family may never actually see the money because Bulger has also been ordered to pay $19.5 million in restitution to the families of his other victims and $25 million more to the government.

The restitution to Wheeler’s family is the highest among all of the victims relatives, according to the Globe. Payments range from $185,000 to about $4.5 million for the other families.

Bulger, 84, was sentenced to two life sentences in November for the deaths of 11 people, including Wheeler. He could still face the death penalty in an Oklahoma state trial for Wheeler’s murder.
