Arapahoe High School students are reunited with their parents.

The student who opened fire at a Colorado school Friday and wounded another student intended to harm more people before killing himself, police said.

Karl Halverson Pierson was armed with a shotgun he purchased legally, a machete, three explosive devices and extra ammunition when he entered Arapahoe High School, Arapahoe County Sheriff Grayson Robinson said, according to the Associated Press. He fired six shots off a pump-action gun, directly hitting 17-year-old Claire Esther Davis before turning the gun on himself, all just 80 seconds after he arrived at the school.

“His intent was evil,” Robinson said. “And his evil intent was to harm multiple individuals.”

Pierson, a member of the school’s debate team, was possibly seeking retribution against the school’s debate coach, who was also the librarian. He was disciplined in September by his target, though the reason remains under investigation. Pierson also threatened the debate coach in September.

“[Pierson] was very outspoken — always involved with class discussion,” a fellow student told NBC News. “So it was kind of odd to see that he was the one who did this.”

“He had very strong beliefs about gun laws and stuff. I also heard he was bullied a lot,” another student told The Denver Post.

On Friday, when the shooting began, students quickly alerted the librarian, who made a “wise tactical decision” to leave the building to lure the shooter away from other students, Robinson said.

The shotgun Pierson carried was purchased legally from a local store on Dec. 6. The ammunition was purchased on the day of the shooting.

Davis, likely caught in the crossfire and not a specific target, has severe head trauma remains in critical condition.

Arapahoe County is where the Aurora movie theater shooting took place last year, when a gunman opened fire during a late-night movie premiere and killed 12 people. Arapahoe County High School is only about eight miles west of Columbine High School, the site of one of the worst school shootings in U.S. history in 1999. The latest shooting took place just one day before Saturday’s one-year anniversary of the mass shooting at a Connecticut elementary school.

Obviously, the motive was revenge against the teacher. If they investigate this like they did the Columbine tragedy, they will switch it to campus bullying. Blame it on the kids. We learned that the Columbine shooters were provoked by being raped during an arrest they called the January Incident. Google January Incident. Columbine victim Mark Taylor was abducted and drugged when he exposed this. Adam Lanza was obsessed by Columbine and knew that his hero Eric Harris was raped. He too was a raped boy. google I am Adam Lanza I will be famous. Our question now. Was Karl Pierson also a raped boy? One student has already reported that Karl changed noticeably after returning from his competition. Something happened on that trip. Karl Pierson was threatening to kill the teacher. They did nothing but kick him off the debate team? Somebody wasn't paying attention. These people aren't fit to be involved with our children. Google Release Mark Taylor.

After reading some of the comments blaming everything from liberals to lack of "structure" I've got to say some of you people are as loony as this kid was.

This country has been awash in guns since the day it was founded, including automatic weapons following the Civil War era. Look in the newspapers from a generation ago and you don't find stories of children walking into schools and committing murder-suicide. It's something unique to THIS GENERATION. I also sincerely doubt that the librarian / debate coach was guilty of bullying. It's not guns or knives or bullying ... it's the twisted moral values taught by the broad American culture via television, internet, Hollywood, music, etc. The dark satanic influences of liberalism.

Guns don't kill people.  People without humanitarian considerations and coping skills kill people.

We are losing our social consciousness.  And, as kristinagsdfly notes below, we are without social structure and respect for authority.

Another left-wing loon goes off his SSRI drugs and snaps. Either quit feeding these kids dangerous drugs, or ban left wing ideology. Both are very bad for children.

The evil that is in this country is reflected in these acts of youth.

We're seeing an ever growing hostility and violent and abusive attitude all over the country which filters down to the very children we seek to protect.

Structure instilled in children is missing, teachers and parents seem to be devoid of cultivating structure in any meaningful way.

This nation is begging for a national disciplinary policy; no longer developed by state or local school boards; which foster structure, adherence to authority without humiliation, and a plan to reduce conflicts between fellow students.

One thing that has to go is this new age liberal anti-bullying campaign; its designed by those "well-intentioned" people seem to have created a plan expecting children to police themselves; which is counter productive to structure.

Teachers must be taught how to deal with students one on one in any discipline situation and never seek to make an example, use other students, or display any humiliation to a student in open class. students must be taught exclusively to worry about themselves and stay out of other students business.

We see this same error in judgement happening all over the US, and when it happens, we blame the child and their family or some sort of mental illness refusing to accept the fact the "tormentor" is causing the problem. People have become sadistic and cynical about the mental well-being of others, being taught really bad examples.

In the 70's we carried our shotguns to school during hunting season. We checked them at the office and picked them up after school. Sometimes the principle would come with us.. Too bad times have changed to where we would have been shot by swat and labeled terrorist. When all we wanted to do was hunt after school...

Colorado has a terrible gun culture. There is no reason for civilians to carry shotguns.

how can teacher discipline students if it involves guns?

@mary.waterton - These shooters are also invariably taking SSRI drugs that are forced on them by the school system for the phony ADHD (the 'disorder' was made up by teachers/psychologists as a way to quiet down the more restless people in a given class).

@EmmanuelleGoldstein Listen to what this girl is saying. Nearly every single mass shooting since Columbine has had SSRI drugs involved. You can blame the NRA all you want, but it does not negate the fact these kids are on these drugs. Google ssri stories.

@EmmanuelleGoldstein  Part of what you are saying is true.  The problem is we don't all see the world with both eyes open.  We have gotten so used to classifying everything as well as showing a difference between things that we view as negative and then creating division based on that same difference. In short, it isn't a left issue or a right issue it is a "people" issue.

You've made an astounding number of assumptions. Lies and crazed propaganda won't help get a grip on this problem.

Bureaucratic Bullying: the most cowardly, most effective, most permanent of all bullying.

@kristinagadfly - Schools are drugging the kids, and the kids are reacting. All of the other shooters were on SSRI drugs, this one will likely be as well. Mass murder is listed as a potential side effect of these drugs --especially when coming off of them. Quit drugging the children, and  this will stop.

@PhillyCannabis " There is no reason for civilians to carry shotguns."  I think that you may be smoking too much of what your namesake implies.

Ownership is a human mental construct. It means nothing. We don't even belong to ourselves. We belong to Universe.

@PhillyCannabisOF course not unless you want to defend your stash. You are aware that the avatar symbol is a substance that is still banned in the bulk of the states as a felony? If you think there is no reason to you to carry a firearem then there is no reason for you to possess anything because can be taken from you. (hense the reason for the second amendment)

@PhillyCannabis I think we all agree this kid should not have been carrying the shotgun to school. Are you suggesting shotguns should be banned? If not, what are you suggesting be done to prevent this type of thing?

kristinagadfly

@EmmanuelleGoldstein@kristinagadflyDrugs are one of the many problems, consider the drugs as an insane solution to the problems I have previously mentioned. If we had structure as I mentioned, some idiot wouldn't be recommending drugs in the first place.

@PhillyCannabis  If "Ownership is a human mental construct" how can we "belong" to the Universe? Or did you just "construct" that?

@lexovet @PhillyCannabis  Last I checked, scientifically speaking there is not one set opinion about Marijuana, as to being harmful or useful!

You actually have medicinal purposes for a "plant" that grows proven by studies!

I can smoke and drive, carry on a conversation , and do math!

I can not say the same bout alcohol, which does not have 2 opinions! It is plain harmful, more so than most drugs people consume illegally!

Your lack of information creates people that think they are entitled, and start bullying others into doing harm!

A person can kill with a pan, does that give you the right to ban the pan?!

Cigarettes cause fires, should we ban smoking?!

@kristinagadfly@EmmanuelleGoldsteinGermany in the 1930's and 40s had the structures you mentioned in place. It was called Nazi youth. Structure isn't the problem. The fact is: the traditional family unit collapsed. We need to restore that.
