The Obama Administration says it will maintain tough oil sanctions on Iran even though the U.S. and five other world powers signed a deal this week to curb Tehran’s nuclear program.

The White House said in a statement Friday that countries could continue to reduce the amount of oil they buy from Iran since there is a sufficient world supply of non-Iranian oil, the Associated Press reports.

Secretary of State John Kerry said the U.S. will continue to enforce its oil sanctions over the next six months.

Tehran will get relief from some other economic sanctions under the terms of the deal, as world powers work to prevent Iran from developing nuclear weapons.
