Jacob Montgomery with Dexter at the home of a friend near Peoria, Ill. Montgomery and his 6-month-old puppy were reunited 9 days after a tornado destroyed their apartment on Nov. 17, 2013 in Washington, Ill.

Dexter, a six-month-old puppy, was found alive under a pile of rubble more than a week after a deadly tornado tore through central Illinois.

Jacob Montgomery, a member of the U.S. National Guard, lost Dexter on Nov. 17 after the tornado tore through his Washington, Ill. apartment. A neighbor sent Montgomery a Facebook message on Tuesday, nine days later to tell him the young pup had been found under the debris where Montgomery’s apartment used to be. An animal rescue organization lured Dexter out with hot dogs.

A vet said the puppy was malnourished but didn’t have any major injuries. Montgomery told the Associated Press that when the dog saw him, “his tail started going.”
