7-year-old Steven Lippard was struck by meteorite fragments in Florida on Saturday, according to the boy’s father. Only two other people in America have been hit by meteorites in the recent past, Astronomer Phil Plait told WTSP in Tampa Bay.
Steven had to get three staples Saturday from a gash in his head from the small metallic stones that hit him. Initial testing at Florida Atlantic University suggests that the stones very well may have been from space.
The other two meteorite incidents in America were a tad more severe. An eight-pound fragment hit a woman in Alabama in 1954, and a 27-pound piece crushed a car in New York in 1992.
